What was meant to be the dream honeymoon for Nick Viall and Natalie Joy quickly turned into a nightmare.

Former US The Bachelor star and podcast host opened up about the experience on a recent episode of The Viall Files, detailing how a romantic getaway to Turks and Caicos ended with his new wife "sobbing" in the airport.

The couple had landed in the tropical paradise - with their three-month old daughter River and Joy's mum - and everything was going smoothly.

Viall explained that right as the customs agent was about to hand Joy's passport back, she stopped, realising there was a tear on the page and instead asked the family to follow her.

"It was the first thing we had to conquer as husband and wife," he said as he and Joy recounted the experience.

"At this point, I'm still optimistic because they're like, 'We're not supposed to let you in.' And I'm hearing, 'supposed to' not 'can't'," Viall said.

But their dreams of a romantic getaway were quickly shattered when they heard the four words, "We're sending you back."

"They come out and they're like, 'Sorry, we're sending you back... you cannot enter this country," he said.

Viall explained that at this point Joy was sobbing, and while he was "radiating with anxiety" he was trying to keep it together for her.

"I'm telling myself, 'you're two days on the f---ing job, time to be a husband.'"

"It was the worst," Joy said, explaining that they ended up being sent back to the US on the next available flight the following morning, and were given an exception to spend one night in the country.

"It was so chaotic," said added. "But I got so many opportunities to call Natalie my wife."

"It was so hard, because we just had this high," Joy continued. "We had the best two days ever... we were so excited.

"And then we got there and it was like, we had put all this effort into River's passport, my mum's passport... [but] I didn't check mine.

"We just assumed everything was going to be okay."
