Miley Cyrus has opened up about her "scary" mid-flight moment earlier this year.

The singer was on board a plane forced to make an emergency landing after being struck by lightning en route to the Asunciónico music festival in Paraguay in March.

Appearing on The Late Show with Seth Meyers on Monday night, the 29-year-old admitted she was in tears and said the incident left all on board "traumatised".

"It was really scary," Cyrus told Meyers.

"I was in my mum's lap because I was pretty sure it didn't matter about the seat belts at this point... I was crying and I was scared."

Cyrus shared some footage and a photo of the damage done to the aircraft on social media at the time, telling fans she was OK.

Speaking to Meyers, she said the show in Paraguay was cancelled due to flooding.

While her bandmates insisted they still wanted to try and put on a show, the singer put her foot down.

"Okay, no, we're in the middle of the forest on a broken down airplane," Miley said she told them.

"There's floods where we're supposed to be going, the stage is sinking."

Cyrus said the group went to Brazil three days earlier than planned, to have some time to recover before the next gig.

"All of us were a little traumatised," she said.

During the wide-ranging interview to promote her new live album, Miley Live, the singer also spoke about the unique way she communicates with her celebrity godmother, Dolly Parton.

The pair starred together in a Super Bowl commercial for US brand T-Mobile but Cyrus said the country music icon still preferred a fax to a text.

"We do use the phone but she does a fax, and then someone scans the fax and then they put it into a text message and that gets sent to me," Miley said.

Sharing another story to drive home her point, Cyrus said: "She also made me a demo one time where she talks about being super high-tech, but it was all through a cassette, which then she voice-demoed onto a flip phone, which someone then put on to the iPhone, which then got sent to me."
