Miley Cyrus appears to sing about exes Liam Hemsworth, Cody Simpson and Kaitlynn Carter in new breakup song
So you know that breakup track Miley Cyrus promised us on Instagram? Well, she delivered.
Fresh from her split with Aussie pop star Cody Simpson, Cyrus waxed lyrical on her new single 'Midnight Sky', singing about her newfound freedom and how she was no longer owned by anyone.
"I was born to run, I don't belong to anyone, oh no. I don't need to be loved by you," she sings in the chorus. "Fire in my lungs, can't bite the devil on my tongue, oh no. I don't need to be loved by you."

The track and accompanying music video — which Cyrus directed herself — comes hours after reports she had split from Simpson after 10 months of dating.
And while the song could very well be about that breakup, the 27-year-old appears to sing about her relationship breakdown with another Aussie: ex-husband Liam Hemsworth.

"Yeah, it's been a long night and the mirror's telling me to go home. But it's been a long time since I felt this good on my own," she sings on 'Midnight Sky'. "Lotta years went by with my hands tied up in your ropes. Forever and ever, no more."
Cyrus and Hemsworth, 30, were together for a decade after first meeting on the 2009 set of their movie, The Last Song. After dating on and off, they eventually married in December 2018, only to call it quits eight months later.
The couple finalised their divorce in January.

Another relationship Cyrus seems to touch on in 'Midnight Sky' is the one with reality star Kaitlynn Carter, 31. Days after announcing her split with Hemsworth in August 2019, Cyrus was photographed kissing Carter on vacation in Italy. They went their separate ways after just two months, but not before making headlines.
"See my lips on her mouth. Everybody's talking now, baby. Ooh, you know it's true," sings Cyrus.
The singer appears to further address their short-lived fling when she sings, "She got her hair pulled back 'cause the sweat's drippin' off of her face. Said, 'It ain't so bad if I wanna make a couple mistakes.' You should know right now that I never stay put in one place."
