The Hills star Kaitlynn Carter opens up about 'rough' breakup with Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus' ex-girlfriend has opened up about their relationship almost one year on from their breakup.

Speaking on Nick Viall's podcast The Viall Files, MTV reality star Kaitlynn Carter revealed that the biggest lesson she learnt from their whirlwind romance is that some things are best kept private.

"What I've really realised is now with dating, I'm super private about it. Since last fall, once that whole situation [with Miley] came to a wrap, I was like, 'That's the last time I'm doing a public thing'," The Hills: New Beginnings star told Viall during the June 29 taping.

Carter and Cyrus embarked on a very public romance in August 2019 when they were seen kissing while on vacation in Italy. Their PDA came just one day after Cyrus announced her split from Aussie actor Liam Hemsworth after eight months of marriage. 

But as quickly as it began, Carter and Cyrus' romance fizzled and by October, Cyrus was dating Aussie singer Cody Simpson.

"We actually did work pretty hard to keep it as private as we could, but it is what it is," Carter explained in the podcast. "It's so hard to go through a breakup in the public eye, too... It's so rough. But there's also a lot to be gained and learned from that."

Carter has had her share of public breakups.

Before Cyrus, she was married to her The Hills co-star, Brody Jenner.

Their breakup in August 2019 came after just one year of marriage and also made headlines when it was speculated their Indonesian wedding ceremony was reportedly not legally binding in the US.

With Cyrus and Simpson loved-up and Jenner rumoured to be dating Briana Jungwirth — the ex and baby mama of One Direction star Louis Tomlinson — Carter has also moved on, but this time she plans to keep her new relationship under wraps. 

"With the person that I've been seeing recently, I'm trying to take it really slow and make sure that everything is in place," Carter shared. "We're not boyfriend/girlfriend."

Although she's now dating a man, Carter said it was unfair for some to assume her relationship with Cyrus was just an "experiment". 

"Whoever I want to date, is who I want to date," she added. "Honestly, it's been interesting to find who I am attracted to. I do feel there's this attitude when someone dates a woman one time that maybe it was just an experiment. People will put that on you... I find that pretty frustrating. I don't think the labels are what matters."
