Matthew Macfadyen's Pride & Prejudice confession: 'I wish I had enjoyed it'

Matthew Macfadyen has expressed regret over one of his most famous movie roles as Mr Darcy in Pride & Prejudice alongside Keira Knightley.

Macfadyen, 49, says he felt insecure over being cast as the iconic character in the 2005 movie adaptation.

Speaking with Anthony Mason on Tuesday's episode of CBS Mornings, the Succession star said he felt "miscast" for the role, adding he "didn't really" enjoy his time on set."

"You said you didn't really enjoy playing Darcy," Anthony asked, to which Macfadyen responded, "No, I didn't really."

"I feel bad saying that," he continued.

"There were moments where I had a good time, but I wish I would have enjoyed it more. I wish I was less worried about it.

"Maybe I felt a bit miscast. I'm not dishy enough. But it worked out."

He said he is still recognised for the role, concluding that he "can't be aging that badly."

Macfadyen took on the iconic role of Mr Darcy in the adaption of Jane Austen's novel of the same name.

Knightley played heroine Elizabeth Bennet and was nominated for Best Actress at the 78th Academy Awards for her performance.

Macfayden would find renewed fame 13 years later playing Tom Wambsgans in hit TV series Succession.

The role saw him named Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series for Succession at the 75th Emmy Awards.

Macfayden's latest role is part of the Marvel Universe, playing Mr Paradox in Deadpool & Wolverine.

"It's a fun part," he told CBS. "Just watching Ryan and Hugh Jackman team up on set was a hoot. I've got a bit of a man crush on those two. They're just great."

"I wouldn't call him a villain," the actor told Games Radar.

"I think he's a terrible sort of apparatchik, who's frustrated and disgruntled and probably is looking to improve his lot – and he has issues.

"He probably wishes he was a supervillain or he wishes he was a superhero, and actually, he's doing a mundane thing of monitoring the timelines in the multiverse. He probably wishes he was Cassandra Nova."
