Mariah Carey and her long-term boyfriend, Bryan Tanaka, confirm their break-up

Mariah Carey and her boyfriend Bryan Tanaka have officially split up, after seven years together.

Following weeks of reports about their breakup, Tanaka confirmed the news with a post on Instagram.

"Our decision to embark on different paths is mutual," the 40-year-old wrote in the post, after what he describes as "seven extraordinary years together".

In the lengthy statement, he noted the "memories… and the artistic collaborations" they've created are "etched in my heart forever".

Tanaka is a choreographer and dancer. The couple met in 2006, when he was involved in her Adventures of Mimi tour. After a decade of friendship, they began dating in 2016.

In the statement, Tanaka wrote, "I want to express my love and appreciation for Mariah and her incredible children, whose warmth and kindness have enriched my life in ways that words cannot capture."

Carey, 54, is mum to 12-year-old twins Monroe and Moroccan, whom she shares with her ex Nick Cannon.

Tanaka ended his statement asking for "understanding, privacy and respect," and thanked fans for "the outpouring of love and support," which he calls "a beacon of strength."

Rumours of the pair's breakup first surfaced when Tanaka was nowhere to be seen on Carey's Christmas tour in December, and was also noticeably absent when she went on holiday with her twins in Aspen.

Carey has not commented on the split. Shortly after Tanaka posted his statement, Carey shared a photo to Instagram celebrating the news that her Christmas hit All I Want For Christmas Is You broke the Spotify record and is sitting at number one on the Billboard charts.

Some fans criticised Tanaka for sharing his statement on the same day the news about Carey's song came out.

"If you really cared you would've never posted this on such a monumental achievement day for her," one person commented on his Instagram post.

According to reports published by TMZ, Tanaka wanted to have kids with the singer, but she wasn't on the same page, which led to their split.

Carey confirmed the relationship in an Associated Press interview in February 2017, after she called him her "boyfriend". Their relationship also played out on-screen, in Carey's E! reality series Mariah's World.

They began dating soon after Carey's split from Aussie businessman, James Packer.
