Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig tease a possible 'Barbie' musical

There could be a Barbie musical in our near future.

The film's director, Greta Gerwig, and its leading star, Margot Robbie, chatted about a potential Barbie musical while on the red carpet at the 35th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala.

"This is not the first time we've thought of it," the Australian actress told ET.

"It's so fun when you can turn everything into a big, crazy musical number. Everything is infinitely more fun."

Though there are some songs in the film - most notably, Ryan Gosling's I'm Just Ken - it's not a full-blown musical.

"I'm deeply [in] love [with] musicals," Gerwig told ET. "Also, America's performed in musicals!"

America Ferrera played a supporting role as Mattel employee Gloria alongside Robbie in Barbie, which was released in July 2023.

Gerwig added, "I really love musicals. I mean, nothing would make me happier. So, I would love a musical."

Ferrera chimed in on the carpet, saying that she reckons her character Gloria "has a number in her".

Barbie was nominated for an all-time record 18 Critics Choice Awards nominations, including one each for Robbie as both actress and producer.

It's also nominated for nine Golden Globes, more than any other film this year.

This month the highly-anticipated musical adaptation of the cult classic film Mean Girls is set to hit theatres, starring Aussie actress Angourie Rice.

Although she's spent years perfecting the American accent, Rice told 9Honey Celebrity having to learn to sing in it was a whole different ball game.

"The problem was I sounded too American when I sang, and they were telling me to soften the Rs and sort of… not hit it so much," she said.

"I was worried, because when I sing, normally I sing in my own accent. I was overcompensating, so that was a funny thing to sort of do in the sound studio."

Rice stars as Cady Heron, a role originally played by Lindsay Lohan in the 2004 film.
