Magda Szubanski channels Kath & Kim character Sharon Strzelecki in coronavirus parody dance video

Magda Szubanski has channelled her famous Kath & Kim character in a tribute video for coronavirus frontline workers.

The Aussie star dusted off Sharon Strzelecki's prized netball uniform to film a morale-boosting video which features doctors, nurses and paramedics from around the country. 

"Noice, strong, courageous. A special Sharon shout out to all our healthcare workers, on the frontline and behind the scenes," 59-year-old Szubanski said of the video posted to both Twitter and Instagram. "To paraphrase Sir Elton John: 'I know it's not much, but it's the best I can do. My gift is my dance and... this one's for you.'"

In the parody video, Szubanski switches up the lyrics of Gloria Jones' 1964 hit 'Tainted Love', renaming it 'COVID Bug'. Acting as her "back-up dancers" were essential workers from Footscray Hospital, Prahan East Medical Centre, Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and Ambulance Victoria, who got in on the fun all while still sticking to social distancing measures. 

"The germs you share seem to go everywhere / And don't think that's noice / Because I toss and turn and can't sleep at night," sings Szubanski, who played a hospital theatre assistant in Kath & Kim. 

Since last week, the comedian has been trying to lift the community's spirits through song and dance. In another video posted to Instagram last week, Szubanski could be seen singing and dancing along to Earth, Wind & Fire's 1978 disco hit 'September'. 

"How to maintain social cohesion in a time of social distancing? Dance! How to maintain social cohesion in the time of social distancing? Dance with me!!" she said of the video. "No bra, bad hair, so far, don't care."
