Karl Stefanovic recreates Tom Cruise's death-defying stunt from 'Mission: Impossible – Fallout'

Karl Stefanovic felt the need for speed so he tried his hand at recreating that Tom Cruise death-defying stunt scene on Mission: Impossible – Fallout.  

To coincide with the film's DVD release today, the experienced professionals over at Stunt Gym in Sydney helped the TODAY host attempt the rooftop stunt that went so badly for 56-year-old Cruise, he ended up with a broken foot.

In the infamous scene filmed in London, Cruise -- who performs all his own stunts -- was given the task of jumping the 9.92-metre distance from one building to another, 70 metres above the ground.

Luckily for Stefanovic, 44, his stunt was in a controlled environment indoors and he only had to leap over a five-metre gap.

"There's no way. I'm not a long-jumper or anything. And it didn't end well for Tom Cruise," Stefanovic said when told of his mission.

Despite having some reservations, the TV presenter got into costume as Cruise's alter ego, Ethan Hunt -- complete with leather jacket and black shades -- as the pros attached him to a harness.

It took a few failed attempts for him to get the hang of it. But after some tips and tricks from the men at Stunt Gym -- who've worked on blockbusters such as The Matrix trilogy, Mission: Impossible 2 and Superman Returns -- Stefanovic eventually nailed the move.

"Mission impossible? Not so much," he said.
