John Mayer responds to hateful message from Taylor Swift fan: 'Do you really hope that I die?'

It seems Jake Gyllenhaal isn't the only one of Taylor Swift's exes copping some slack this week.

After the singer opened up about her relationship with the actor in her new song, 'All Too Well', Gyllenhaal has been on the end of hateful messages from Swift's many fans. And he's not the only one.

While singer John Mayer isn't talked about on her new album, Red (Taylor's Version), she does sing about him on the track 'Dear John', which will feature on her soon-to-be re-recorded album Speak Now.

But already Swift's legions of fans are criticising Mayer online over the pair's failed romance back in 2009 — and unlike Gyllenhaal who has yet to respond to the online noise, Mayer called out the trolls. 

"F–-k yourself you ugly b---h I hope you choke on something …  Answer me you b---h," one user direct-messaged Mayer.

The 44-year-old musician then shared a screenshot of the message before replying.

"I've been getting so many messages like these the past couple days," Mayer wrote back. "I'm not upset, I just tend to have a curious mind and feel compelled to ask. Do you really hope that I die?"

Taken aback, the troll reportedly replied in a voice message, "My friend literally dared me to do that. She's a Taylor fan and like so am I. It was a dare. I'm sorry. I did not expect you to see."

The singer accepted the apology but was perplexed as to why people would write such hateful messages.

"So it's a fun thing people are doing without taking into account that I might see it and be affected by it?" he replied, before concluding, "It's 100 per cent OK. Go forth and live happy and healthy!"

Gyllenhaal has been on the receiving end of similar messages since Swift released 'All Too Well' for the first time in a decade. It's believed the song details Swift's painful breakup from the actor, who she dated back in 2010.
