Jesse Tyler Ferguson wasn't first choice to officiate Modern Family co-star Sarah Hyland's wedding
Jesse Tyler Ferguson has revealed he wasn't supposed to be the one officiating Sarah Hyland's recent nuptials to Wells Adams.
He said he happily stepped into the role when his Modern Family co-star Ty Burrell, who played Hyland's TV dad, could no longer be the wedding officiant.
"I don't know if people know this, but Ty Burrell was meant to do it, and there was a family emergency," Ferguson told Entertainment Tonight at the premiere of his new film, Ivy + Bean, on Monday night (Tuesday AEST).

"So, I got a phone call 12 days before the wedding, and that's why Ty wasn't there, he had stuff going on."
Ferguson admitted he was nervous about his starring role in the big day.

"I was like, 'Well, no pressure, this is my first time, and then it's going to be a wedding, and it's going to be in Vogue magazine, and there's also going to be paparazzi shots of me from a helicopter, officiating, no pressure'," he said.
The actor said Burrell had graciously given him some "bullet points" for his starring role.
"He hadn't written anything up, but he had some ideas, and I was like, 'Oh, this is all really good. This is a jumping-off place'," Ferguson said.

Hyland said having Ferguson officiating her special day made so much sense to her with the 31-year-old bride and her TV uncle being tight-knit on and off screen for years.
"I've known Jesse since I was 18 years old. I remember his first date with his husband, Justin," Hyland told Vogue.
"So we've been through so much. Jesse and Justin and Wells and I have travelled together, just the four of us. So it was really special to have him up there."
Ferguson confirmed all of the Modern Family cast had been invited but not everyone could make it.
