Jason Derulo sued for sexual misconduct and intimidation

Singer Jason Derulo has been sued for sexual misconduct and intimidation by an aspiring singer who claims she was dropped from his label after she rejected his advances.

Emaza Gibson, and influencer and aspiring singer, alleged Derulo made sexual advances towards her after she joined his Atlantic Records–affiliated label, Future History in August 2021, but claims that after she rejected him, she was dropped from the label in September 2022.

The lawsuit, which includes allegations of quid pro quo sexual harassment, intimidation, and breach of contract, was filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court on October 5.

The court documents, obtained by Vulture, alleged that Derulo told Gibson that "if she wanted to be successful in the 'this business' (aka, the music industry), Plaintiff would be required to partake in 'goat skin and fish scales,' which is a Haitian reference referring to conducting sex rituals, sacrificing a goat, goat blood and doing cocaine."

It also said the "explicit demand for sex-in-exchange-for-success was reinforced through Derulo's subsequent behavior."

Gibson says when she finally gave in to an "invitation for drinks" at a recording studio around September 2021, Derulo supposedly gave her an "inappropriate" amount of alcohol, despite her saying she's not a big drinker.

Gibson alleges on another occasion during a business trip to New York to meet Atlantic executives in November 2021, another female recording artist appeared to suggest that Gibson sleep with Derulo to advance her career, which Gibson says confirmed her suspicions about the In My Head singer's intentions.

The lawsuit also alleges a number of other incidents of hostility, including Derulo supposedly charging at Gibson, raising his voice, and refusing to record with her.

The aspiring singer commented on the filing in an interview with NBC News this week, stating: "I'm at this point in my life right now, it's very heartbreaking... I have anxiety, I'm traumatised. I've dealt with inhumane work situations … I'm at this point where I'm back to zero and I have nothing.

"I'm just trying to fight for what's right, because what was done to me was not OK," she said, "And I wouldn't want anybody else to go through what I went through. They wasted my time. They promised me things..."

The plaintiff is seeking unpaid wages, loss of earnings, deferred compensation and other employment benefits and damages for emotional distress, wanting a jury trail for her complaint against Derulo. She is being represented by Rob Zambrano, who is also the lawyer in charge of singer Lizzo's sexual-harassment lawsuit.
