Hugh Grant complains the cinema he saw Joker in was 'too loud'

Hugh Grant has complained about his experience seeing the new Joker film was ruined by "unendurable" sound quality.

Grant, 59, visited his local cinema in London on Saturday night to see Todd Phillips' Joker film that has divided critics with its portrayal of violence.

But violence wasn't the issue for Grant.

The Notting Hill actor felt like the acoustics in the cinema were a problem and made his feelings about it known on Twitter.

"Am I old or is the cinema MUCH TOO LOUD? Unendurable. Pointless. @vuecinemas," Grant wrote on Twitter after seeing the film.

Vue cinema responded to Grant's gripe with the volume writing: "I'm so sorry for any disappointment felt with the volume levels in our venues Hugh, please be assured we do regularly check these to ensure they comply to health and safety standards. I'll ensure your feedback is passed on to the relevant teams."

Grant replied by kindly pointing out that the Vue spokesperson didn't know which cinema he saw the movie at.

"Fullham Broadway. Saturday Night. Screen 7. Joker. But joke was on us," Grant wrote.

Grant's complaint with Joker sits apart from the controversy that the film has generated for evoking empathy for a psychotic comic book character who gets a thrill out of murdering innocent people.

Joaquin Phoenix, who plays failed comedian Arthur Fleck-turned-Joker, walked out of an interview when a journalist broached the subject of violence in the film.

In an interview with the UK's The Telegraph, the journalist asked Phoenix if he was concerned the movie may "perversely end up inspiring exactly the kind of people it's about, with potentially tragic results." "Why? Why would you…? No, no," Phoenix responded before walking out of the room.

According to The Telegraph, it took one hour for the actor to be coaxed by a Warner Bros rep into coming back to finish the interview. And while Phoenix didn't answer the question upon his return, the reporter noted that the actor "panicked... because the question genuinely hadn't crossed his mind before."
