Styles wrote What Is Enough “about two years ago” as he told the crowd at his Madison Square Garden concert on Friday night (Saturday AEDT).
The singer addressed the crowd during his sold-out show saying he felt “incredibly lucky” to perform the long run in New York, in videos shared by fans.
“There are so many people in my life, friends and people that I’ve worked with that I wouldn’t have been able to do this without,” he said.
“And two years ago today, I lost one of those friends.
“I’m sure a lot of you have been through similar things. I hope you haven’t.
“But really, it’s just about looking after each other.
“There are so many people who have touched my life in such special ways that I wouldn’t be here without.
“I’m gonna play you a song I wrote for my friend about two years ago, if that’s all right.”

Styles appeared to reference Payne’s November 2024 funeral in his song.
Fans became emotional as Styles sang; “I could tell you what it’s like to bury friends on a Wednesday night, gathered in the garden ’round a fire.”
Styles sang of “the friend in all those satellites”, “among the stars above”.

Styles and Payne were original members of boy band One Direction alongside Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik and Niall Horan.
The band rose to fame in 2010. However, Styles announced his departure months before the group officially disbanded in 2015.

In a statement following his death, Payne’s bandmates paid tribute to the star remembering him as a brother they “loved so dearly”.
“We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing,” the statement said.

"In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly.
"The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us.
“We will miss him terribly. We love you, Liam.”
