Gwyneth Paltrow has opened up about her seven-year acting hiatus, sharing what motivated her eventual return to the big screen.

Ahead of her career-reviving role in table tennis biopic Marty Supreme, she's gotten candid about her reasons for temporarily stepping back from Hollywood.

Paltrow, 52, was matched up with Aussie Heartthrob Jacob Elordi, 28, for a stint on Variety and CNN's Actors on Actors series, where stars meet to discuss both their personal and professional lives.

When asked by Elordi about her time spent away from the limelight, Paltrow admitted she'd found new meaning in family, while also nurturing her growing business.

"When I was doing it in my twenties, I never took a break," she began. "So I think I burned myself out a bit."

Paltrow then made the decision then to approach her career differently; taking on more supporting roles and "having more of a life."

"I needed to grow up and understand who I really was, and I got a lot of those answers through my family. Then I started a business."

Paltrow refers, of course, to wellness and lifestyle company Goop, which she initially launched as a weekly newsletter in 2008. From there, it evolved into an empire.

Beyond her business, Paltrow shares two children with ex-husband and Coldplay singer Chris Martin; Apple, 21, and Moses, 19.

She also acts as stepmother to the two children of now-husband Brad Fulchuk, whom she wed in 2018.

When speaking about her decision to return to the big screen, The Iron Man alum credits empty-nest syndrome as the main motivator.

She says that once all four children had moved out of home, she began to reconsider her acting hiatus.

"I started to have a real panic around my purpose and where I'm supposed to orient myself: Where do I want to live? Who am I? It was pretty profound."

But she says it was her brother, Jake, who finally convinced her to take the plunge after seven years.

She revealed that she'd been approached about a role in Marty Supreme by director Josh Safdie, but was hesitant to accept it until her sibling weighed in.

"[He] said to me 'you're doing this.' He was very emphatic about it." Paltrow recalled.

The actress has recently stepped out for the biopic's world premiere alongside co-star Timothée Chalamet.

She put on a sweet display with son Moses, who appeared the spitting image of Chris Martin as he made his red carpet debut.

Paltrow portrays wealthy socialite Kay Stone in the film, who goes on to form a connection with Chalamet's Marty Reisman.
