Gavin Rossdale admits he feels 'shame' over 2015 divorce from Gwen Stefani

Gavin Rossdale says he feels "shame" over his divorce from Gwen Stefani.

Speaking with former Good Morning America co-anchors Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes on a recent episode of their podcast Amy and T.J. Podcast, the musician opened up about the breakdown of his marriage, describing it as his "clearest and simplest shame."

"I never thought I'd ever get divorced," he said.

"So there's a simple shame in my life."

The Bush frontman shared that his own parents had been married three times, and that his greatest regret is putting his kids in a similar situation to the one he experienced as a child – something he never wanted to do.

"I feel bad for my kids, that's it," he told the duo.

"I wish I could have found a way to not have that in their lives. It wasn't fun for me to come from a broken home … It can be quite debilitating for kids … the overriding thing is you don't want to let your kids down. 

"The biggest thing would be when you see the kids that sometimes there's a loss," he added.

"It'd be nice if there was more of a connection with the person who made them with me."

Rossdale and Stefani were married in 2002, splitting 13 years later in 2015 amid rumours he cheated on the No Doubt singer with their Nanny.

The former couple share three children, Kingston, 17, Zuma, 15, and Apollo, 10.

Stefani has since moved on with country singer Blake Shelton, whom she met as co-hosts on The Voice.

At the time of meeting, Shelton was going through his own public divorce from fellow country singer Miranda Lambert.

Rossdale said he often runs into Stefani and Shelton at events, referring to them as "the other team", adding that he feels "really proud" of himself for his "consistency as a father."

And although he refers to the 2015 split as a "very contentious, hugely emotional, flared up situation," Rossdale says he avoids talking about his ex-wife in a public manner.

"Less said, soonest mended and I said nothing," he shared on the podcast.

"I'm handcuffed because I would never want to overly say anything negative about their mom. That's just not right."
