Grimes confirms her and Elon Musk's newborn's name is X Æ A-12, reveals meaning behind it

Grimes has confirmed the strange name of her firstborn child is in fact X Æ A-12.

The 32-year-old 'Oblivion' singer confirmed the name, as well as providing the meaning in a Twitter post.

"X, the unknown variable ⚔️. Æ, my elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence). A-12 = precursor to SR-17 (our favorite aircraft). No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent 🤍 + (A=Archangel, my favorite song) (⚔️🐁 metal rat)," she wrote.

We still aren't quite sure exactly how the name is pronounced, but fans have taken to Twitter with their own theories.

One user suggested the name could possibly be interpreted as X Ash Archangel. The tweet showed a screenshot from Wikipedia explaining the character Æ is a ligature for ash, A-12 is thought to be in reference to the CIA aircraft Lockheed A-12, which had the codename Archangel.

X Æ A-12 is Grimes' first child and Musk's sixth. He has five sons from his previous marriage to author Justine Wilson — twins Xavier and Griffin, and triplets Damian, Saxon and Kai. The couple married in 2000 and separated in 2008.

Musk and Grimes began dating in 2018. She announced her pregnancy on social media in January.

"I'm sorry I haven't been promoting my album properly or on social media more," she revealed to her fans.

"This whole thing has been a bit of an ordeal," the singer added, revealing she had some "complications early on".

During a YouTube live stream in February, Grimes was asked if she was hoping for a boy or girl.

"I don't want to gender them in case that's not how they feel in their life," she said. "I don't know, I just feel like it doesn't need to be known... They may decide their fate and identity."
