George Clooney seems to have delivered a cheeky dig on the Golden Globes stage.

The 64-year-old was at the podium to present the award for Best Motion Picture – Drama, making a subtle reference to the subject that has seen him dominate headlines over the last few weeks – his new French citizenship, and US President Donald Trump's reaction to it.

As he and his Ocean's Eleven co-star Don Cheadle presented the award, the Golden Globe nominee began his address in French.

"Bonsoir, mes amis," the Jay Kelly Golden Globe nominee began, wishing the audience a good evening.

"C'est un honneur d'être ici," he added, meaning, "it's an honour to be here".

Cheadle, 61, joined in on the fun, adding in a "bonsoir" himself before teasing the nominee for losing in the Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture Comedy category to Marty Supreme star Timothée Chalamet.

On December 31, 2025, Trump shared on his platform Truth Social, "Good News! George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political prognosticators of all time, have officially become citizens of France which is, sadly, in the midst of a major crime problem because of their absolutely horrendous handling of immigration, much like we had under Sleepy Joe Biden."

The ER actor responded in a statement on January 2, "I totally agree with the current president. We have to make America great again. We'll start in November," referring to the upcoming midterm elections.
