'Game of Thrones' fans point out editing gaffe after Jaime Lannister's hand grows back

Warning: Spoilers ahead! Consider watching Season 8, Episode 5 "The Bells" before reading on.

And you thought that coffee cup was out of place.

Eagle-eyed Game of Thrones fans spotted what they believed to be an odd detail during yesterday's episode -- the penultimate before the series finale next week -- and it quickly took off on social media. But, as it turns out, there's a reasonable explanation!

Episode 5 finds Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) reunited with his sister (and love interest) Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey). When Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) unleashes her fiery wrath upon the people of King's Landing, the power duo attempts to make a run for it through the tunnels. But, lo, they realise that there is no escape, so they resign to hold each other -- like true soulmates -- as the walls literally come crashing down around them.

After the episode's release, a photo of Jaime embracing Cersei began to circulate online. The problem? Coster-Waldau's real right hand is clearly visible, which would be impossible for Jaime, who lost his in Season 3.

Since then, he's worn a solid gold prosthetic hand.

And fans jumped at the chance to call out the apparent snafu, which would be the second since last week's mysterious coffee cup that appeared on a table during Episode 4, which has since been edited out.

"LMAO GUYS DID JAIME LANNISTER GROW HIS HAND BACK LAST NIGHT? " one fan tweeted.

"Is that is jaime lannister’s whole hand and uhh?? did y’all forget something," another fan wrote.

Added another: "Some pretty advanced medical treatments back in Dragon Days huh?"

But as Buzzfeed reported, citing GoT photographer Helen Sloan, the photo was taken on set, before special effects were added, as they historically are, and Jaime's "real hand" did not appear in the actual episode.

HBO, the network that airs the show in the US, releases images from each episode online after it has aired. The image in question is no longer on its website, but was reportedly live as of early this morning.

With King's Landing completely turned to ash, we're hoping the final episode of Game of Thrones answers all our remaining burning questions.
