Little-known Aussie link in famous Freaky Friday scene

The first thing you think of when you hear the words "Freaky Friday" is that iconic guitar intro from the film's most famous song, Take Me Away.

Many fans lament that the song, performed by fictional band Pink Slip in the movie, was only created for the 2003 blockbuster.

But this is a widely-held misconception.

In fact, the song is a cover of the debut single of an all-female Aussie alternative/punk rock band named Lash.

Made up of four 14-year-old girls who attended a Catholic school in Perth, Western Australia, they quickly rose to fame when the song was first released in 2001 and peaked at number 33 on the ARIA Charts. It was also nominated for ARIA Award for Breakthrough Artist – Single.

Two years later it was being covered for the film by actress and singer Christina Vidal, who played the lead singer of Pink Slip, and included in the film with another one of their songs, Beauty Queen.

Three members of Lash – lead guitarist Jessica Bennett, vocals and guitarist Belinda-Lee Reid and drummer Jaclyn Pearson – took the chance to reminisce on the milestone moment on Today Extra.

Jaclyn Pearson, who was the drummer of Lash, recalled the day thy were told their song was going to be used in the Disney movie.

"I distinctly remember the day. It was very exciting," she said.

"We had been rehearsing in our rehearsal studio, which was actually at Jess's parents house... and we got the phone call and they told us, 'Your song is going to be used on a Disney film'."

After they heard that, they "just kind of looked at each other and thought, 'Surely this can't be real.'"

Once the song became part of the zeitgeist, the band members found it "so surreal."

"Honestly, it's just we have to pinch ourselves to realise it's really reality. We didn't realise the scale that this would blow up to. It's a massive Disney blockbuster and we're just so honoured," said Reid.

Oftentimes, a band will blow up with the song they spent the least amount of time making. This was certainly the case wth Take Me Away.

Bennett recalls, "I don't think it was a very difficult song to write. I mean, we were very young and angsty teens."

Reid then jumped in and complimented her bandmate, "She's a very talented guitarist. That guitar lick was pure talent."

Reid and Bennett finally got the chance to meet Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis, during the Sydney premeire of the sequel on Tuesday night, 22 years after their song featured on the original soundtrack.

"It was quite daunting, but equally exciting," said Bennett on meeting the actresses, "They were both really warm and welcoming.And they congratulated us on the song."

Reid added that, "Jamie shared an actual memory of rehearsing in front of her husband, who actually is from Spinal Tap," speaking of actor Christopher Guest, who portrayed the fictional band's guitarist.

"It was such a memory for her to actually rehearse in front of her husband and go, 'Do you do you reckon this is good?'" to which Guest apparently reacted with a poker face.

Lash unfortunately broke up the same year their song was included in the film, with Reid going on to pursue a solo career before becoming a real-estate agent.

Bennett and Pearson ended up joining the group The Preytells from 2004 to 2009.

Bennett now runs Love Shack Studios in Footscray, Victoria, while Pearon is a microbiologist based in Scotland.

Now they are amazed a whole new generation of fans are able to enjoy their music.

"It really is surreal, isn't it?" said Reid, "It's the second generation of fans. Our generation have had kids, and now their kids – they're rocking out in America to it, in Australia now.

"It's great to see people's versions online playing, learning," added Bennett.

As for if the band will be getting back together any time soon?

"We're all such good friends," said Pearson, "I would do it in a heartbeat if it was possible. They're some of my best friends. And the bond that we have is unbreakable.

"I would enjoy that and it would be heaps of fun. So maybe we should."
