Former Bachelor Australia star Matty J reveals he's the victim of identity theft

Former Bachelor Australia star Matthew Johnson, aka Matty J, has become the latest victim of identity theft.

The reality star made the revelation on Instagram yesterday, sharing screenshots of a profile belonging to 'Cyrus Branson' — a fake account that had been passing off Matty's photos as its own.

"Someone has set up a fake profile trying to get money for fraud investments. Don't trust @branscrus — it's a scam!" he warned his followers in an Instagram Stories video.

In the bogus profile's bio, the culprit claimed to be a "Private investor, serial entrepreneur and into global outreach", all while pretending to be Matty J.

Naturally, the reality star reported the account to Instagram but he was swiftly blocked by the fraudster. 

"Dodgy!!" Matty J then captioned a screenshot of the website listed on the page, before encouraging his 236,000 followers to report the account. 

Just last month, it was Matty J's fiancée, Laura Byrne, who was the victim of identity fraud. The new mum — she and Matty welcomed daughter Marlie-Mae in June —  discovered that a person known as 'Tobz' had used the couple's family photo as his profile pic on the dating app Bumble.

"Turns out you can date all three of us," Laura wrote alongside a screenshot of the fake account.

The couple aren't the only famous people subjected to identity fraud in the past. Former Home and Away actor Lincoln Lewis was left terrified after a Melbourne woman used his image and impersonated the actor to attract women online.

"It kills your vibe, it ruins your day. It makes you feel powerless and it makes you feek s---," said Lewis, the son of rugby league great Wally Lewis, in court tapes obtained by A Current Affair. "It just takes away your happiness because now I've got this constant thought in my mind that something's happening that I'm powerless to stop or even find out."
