Emmys 2021: Winners, surprises and all the biggest moments

The Primetime Emmy Awards has wrapped up for another year!

Following an incredible red carpet, featuring Kaley Cuoco, Seth Rogen, Catherine Zeta-Jones and more, the Los Angeles ceremony was clearly dominated by three big winners: The Crown, Ted Lasso and Mare of Easttown.

The Queen's Gambit had a big night too — but not without a fiery acceptance speech from Scott Frank.

1.10pm: The Queen's Gambit wins Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series or Movie

The Emmys have ended on a decidedly royal note, with The Queen's Gambit taking out the final category (following The Crown).

The Netflix series has won Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, beating out contenders including Mare of Easttown and Wandavision.

1.05pm: The Crown wins Outstanding Drama Series

It's a royal flush! The Crown has won Outstanding Drama Series, capping off a night of big wins.

Creator Peter Morgan accepted the award from London, surrounded by cast and crew of the royal drama.

"We're going to have a party now, I'm lost for words and I'm very, very grateful," he said to conclude his speech.

1.02pm: Ted Lasso wins Outstanding Comedy Series

The Ted Lasso cast and crew will have some serious celebrating to do, topping off the night with the award for Outstanding Comedy Series.

The team's biggest shout out went to the audience: "We all know how lucky we are to do this for a living, and we appreciate you."

12.50pm: Hamilton wins Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded)

Hamilton is now an Emmy-winning musical.

Accepting the award on behalf of Lin-Manuel Miranda, cast member Renee Elise Goldsberry spoke of the importance of Disney Plus' broadcast of the music during the pandemic.

"When we were dark and dispersed, television provided the platform for us to come together to put on a show," she said.

12.47pm: Stephen Colbert wins Outstanding Variety Special (Live)

Stephen Colbert has taken out the Outstanding Variety Special (Live) with his Election 2020 coverage.

The talk show host thanked those involved in Stephen Colbert's Election Night 2020: Democracy's Last Stand Building Back America Great Again Better, as well as Ted Lasso for "not being in this category".

12.38pm: Josh O'Connor wins Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series

Another Crown jewel for Netflix.

Josh O'Connor has won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his performance as Prince Charles, describing his time on the show as "the most rewarding two years of my life".

Among his personal tributes was a message to his grandparents, including his grandmother who died in recent months: "Your kindness and loyalty has been the greatest gift."

12.36pm: Olivia Colman wins Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series

Bow down to the queen: Olivia Colman has just won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

The Crown star, who played Queen Elizabeth II in seasons three and four of the royal drama, became emotional as she accepted the award, saying she wished her father was there to see it.

"I lost my daddy during COVID, he would have loved all of this," she said through tears.

12.27pm: Ewan McGregor wins Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie

"It's quite difficult going after you, Kate," Ewan McGregor told Kate Winslet before accepting his Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie win.

The Halston star diligently thanked the team behind the series, before sending a message of love to girlfriend Mary Elizabeth Winstead and his children.

12.23pm: Kate Winslet wins Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie

Mare of Easttown is cleaning up!

An overjoyed Kate Winslet has won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, taking to the stage amid a standing ovation.

The British actress praised the team behind the hit HBO show, saying it arrived in an era focused on "women having each other's back".

"[It was a] cultural moment and it brought people together and it gave them something to talk about other than a global pandemic," she said. Winslet also paid tribute to her character, a "middle-aged imperfect flawed mother" who "made us all feel validated". Wrapping up her speech, she mentioned her children and husband "who I get to hold hands with for the rest of my life! Yes! I am the winner."

12.13pm: Michaela Cole wins Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie

Michaela Cole appeared speechless as she was named winner of Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie by Sir Patrick Stewart.

The I May Destroy You writer and actress opened her speech with a message for fellow writers, beginning, "Write the tale that scares you, that makes you feel uncertain ... I dare you".

Cole dedicated her win to "every single survivor" of sexual assault — a topic closely explored in her series.

12.07pm: The Queen's Gambit wins Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie

Checkmate: The Queen's Gambit has won Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

Accepting his gong, Scott Frank thanked all those who collaborated on the popular Netflix series, which tracked the rise of fictional chess master Beth Harmon.

Frank wouldn't allow his moment to be taken from him before he was ready, declaring "stop the music" as the strains of the play-off instrumental began while he spoke. When the music began again, he issued a second warning: "I'm almost done."

The director ended his speech by paying tribute to lead actress Anya Taylor-Joy, praising her dedication to the role. Thankfully they turned down the music during her big moment!

11.56am: Debbie Allen wins the Governor's Award

Debbie Allen has taken out this year's Emmys Governor's Award, presented for outstanding achievement in the arts. As an actress, dancer, choreographer, singer-songwriter, director and producer, Allen's career has spanned three decades.

11.51: RuPaul's Drag Race wins Outstanding Competition Program

US Olympian Allyson Felix and Paralympian Jessica Long have presented the award for Outstanding Competition Program to RuPaul's Drag Race.

11.49am: A win for women

11.41am: Jason Sudeikis wins Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

Jennifer Coolidge has been welcomed to the stage with raucous applause, praising the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series nominees for overcoming the "incredible handicap in this business" of being male.

The award has gone to Jason Sudeikis for Ted Lasso.

Inspired by the themes of the series, the actor thanked his family — including his two children with ex-fiancee Olivia Wilde — his mentors and teachers, and his 'teammates' on the show.

11.36am: Jean Smart wins Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

Double Emmy nominee Jean Smart has won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks.

The actress, who also scored an Emmy nod for her role in Mare of Easttown, paid tribute to her late husband Richard Gilliland, who died six months ago.

"I would not be here without him," she told the audience. Smart also gave a shoutout to her two children, describing them as "both very courageous individuals in their own right", and to her Hacks co-star Hannah Einbinder.

11.30am: Giant 'STOP' signs spotted at the Emmys

Wondering how the Emmys producers are keeping those acceptance speeches so short and sweet?

11.21am: Hacks wins Outstanding Director for a Comedy Series

And it's another win for Hacks, with Lucia Aniello taking home the gong for Outstanding Director for a Comedy Series.

Aniello thanked the show's lead stars Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder for "giving so much of themselves" to their characters: "They are you and we were so lucky to experience your love every day."

It's been quite a time for Aniello, who revealed she also got married to Paul W. Downs last week.

11.16am: Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series

The four lead stars of Schitt's Creek — which swept last year's Emmys with its final season — have returned to the stage to present Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.

After joking about a mishap with the teleprompter, Dan Levy, who was accompanied by father Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara and Annie Murphy, announced the team from Hacks as the winner.

11.06am: SNL wins Outstanding Variety Sketch Series

Saturday Night Live has been named Outstanding Variety Sketch Series — but the announcement slightly overshadowed the win.

Ken Jeong kicked off the category announcement with a skit, in which he was denied entry into the awards ceremony because he hadn't proven his vaccination status.

11.04am: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver wins Outstanding Variety Talk Series

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver has taken out two consecutive award categories. Accepting the Outstanding Variety Talk Series gong from presenter Kaley Cuoco, Oliver began with a shout-out to Conan O'Brien and ended with a tribute to comedian Norm Macdonald, who died last week.

11.00am: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver wins Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series

The team from Last Week Tonight with John Oliver has taken out the Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series category. Only a small group of the writing team was permitted at the show, with those in attendance joking, "The show sent the hottest writers."

The award was, rather mysteriously, dedicated to actor Adam Driver: "He knows what he did, and we know what we'd like him to do."

10.53am: Tobias Menzies wins Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series

The Crown is reigning supreme at the Emmys, with Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series going to Tobias Menzies.

The actor, who portrayed Prince Philip, did not attend the awards with the rest of the cast in London.

10.47am: Gillian Anderson wins Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series

TV host Stephen Colbert has presented Gillian Anderson with the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for The Crown.

Anderson, who played UK Prime Minister Gillian Anderson in the fourth series of the royal drama, thanked the show's creator, her ex-husband Peter Morgan, for her role in the show.

However, she dedicated her award to her manager of 20 years, Connie Freiberg, saying she, "believed I had talent when I didn't even think I had talent."

10.39am: Another win for The Crown with Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series

The Crown has added another win to its tally, with Jessica Hobbs taking out Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series.

10.36: The Crown's Peter Morgan wins Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series

Mindy Kaling has roasted stars including Kate Winslet and Stephen Colbert, declaring, "If I have something to say about you, I will say it to your face" before announcing Peter Morgan the winner of Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for The Crown.

Beaming in from London, Morgan said the cast and crew was "thrilled" with the win. "I'm very proud, I'm very grateful, we're going to party."

10.27am: Evan Peters wins Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or Movie

Mare of Easttown has picked up its second win for the night, with Evan Peters named Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or Movie.

The actor also called out the show's lead Kate Winslet "for being Kate Winslet", and said the win was a "dream come true".

10.23am: Supporting actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or Movie

Julianne Nicholson has won Supporting Actress in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or Movie for her role in Mare of Easttown.

Reading from a printed speech, Nicholson thanked the "unbelievable" cast and her "Mare family", before dedicating her win to co-star Kate Winslet.

"Man you're good at acting, but turns out you're got at caring for a whole production. You led all of us ... with such care and intelligence and love," she said.

10.19am: Cedric the Entertainer pokes fun at Nicki Minaj's vaccine controversy

Addressing the audience, host Cedric the Entertainer made a cheeky reference to Nicki Minaj's recent tweets about the COVID-19 vaccination, in which she sensationally claimed had caused her cousin's friend's testicles to swell. Saying he was vaccinated, Cedric quipped, "I did not have a reaction like Nicki Minaj's cousin's friend."

10.10am: Brett Goldstein wins Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series

Brett Goldstein is going home with the gong for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in Ted Lasso. The award was presented by Black-ish star Yara Shahidi.

"I was very specifically told I'm not allowed to swear so this speech is going to be f---ing short," he joked.

10.05am: Seth Rogen delivers opening monologue and presents Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series

Seth Rogen has opened the awards with a monologue, joking about the ceremony being held in a "hermetically sealed tin" during a pandemic — "I would not have come to this!".

"It's more important that we have three chandeliers than that we don't kill Eugene Levy tonight," he quipped.

Rogen presented the first award of the night, Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, to Hannah Waddington for Ted Lasso.

"Jason [Sudeikis], you changed my life with this," she told her co-host and show creator in an emotional acceptance speech.

10.01am: The Emmys officially kick off!

Cedric the Entertainer has kicked off the Emmys with a musical number, with guest vocals from Mandy Moore, Tracey Ellis Ross and more.

9.50am: Michaela Jae Rodriguez hits the red carpet

Michaela Jae Rodriguez (MJ), who recently made history as the first transgender actress to be nominated for an Emmy in outstanding actress in a drama, stepped out on the red carpet in a gorgeous teal Atelier Versace gown with Bulgari jewellery.

9.45am: Seth Rogen is dapper in orange

Seth Rogen is looking schmick in an orange blazer, taking his new shorter hairstyle for its first outing on the red carpet.

The actor chopped his hair a couple of weeks ago, sharing the look on Instagram with the caption "New hair, same smoldering look."

Rogan teamed his orange jacket with a blush-toned shirt (with matching bow tie) and glasses, and the look is getting plenty of love on social media.

9.29am: Kaley Cuoco steals the show on the red carpet

It's hard to miss Kaley Cuoco on the red carpet — the Flight Attendant and Big Bang Theory actress and Emmy nominee is wearing an eye-popping neon yellow hue.

Cuoco recently announced her split from husband Karl Cook.

9.23am: Anya Taylor-Joy glams up for the Emmys

9.17am: Catherine Zeta-Jones fires up the red carpet

She arrived with husband Michael Douglas who is nominated for his role in The Kominsky Method.

9.15am: Elizabeth Olsen's nod to her famous sisters

Don't you just love it when you have a major red carpet event to attend, and your siblings happen to be fashion designers? Relatable, right?

Elizabeth Olsen is wearing a dress designed by her sisters Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen - yes, those Olsens — for their label The Row.

The actress, who is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series for her role in Marvel's WandaVision, has teamed the long-sleeved white gown with some dazzling drop earrings.

9.08am: Ted Lasso star injects some old-world style into the red carpet

We must doff our hat to Brendan Hunt, whose red carpet outfit is straight out of a bygone era.

The Ted Lasso actor, writer and producer has gone all out with a top hat, a waistcoat and a cane, and judging by the poses he's striking for the photographer, he's clearly 'feeling himself' in the ensemble.

Hunt, who plays Coach Beard in the beloved comedy series, is up for three awards.

9.02am: Gillian Anderson poses on the red carpet

Also up for a nomination for The Crown is actress Gillian Anderson who portrayed Margaret Thatcher in Season 4.

The star is up for Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

8.50am: The Crown's Emma Corrin has arrived

She won hearts with her portrayal of Princess Diana, and now Emma Corrin is turning heads on the red carpet.

Corrin, who is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category for her role in The Crown's fourth season, is wearing a pale yellow dress paired with matching long fingerless gloves — with some long black nails peeking out — and a bonnet.

The British performer has worn plenty of unusual red carpet looks in the past 12 months, so this is true to form.

8.00am: Bridgerton star celebrates show's 12 nominations

It's been a huge year for the cast of Bridgerton, with the show's first season already having made history as Netflix's most-watched show.

The period drama is nominated in 12 categories today, an achievement star Nicola Coughlan is celebrating. "Happy Bridgerton Emmys Day!" the Irish actress tweeted, alongside a photo of herself with co-star Claudia Jessie.

"So proud to be part of this show and to have 12 nominations is truly beyond our wildest dreams."So lucky to share this experience with this brilliant girl who is so kind, supportive, hilarious and sometimes stalks my social media, I love you Clauds!"

The Emmys red carpet is moments away from kicking off — but some attendees have been kind enough to share a glimpse of their getting-ready routine.

Anderson shared a selfie from her pre-awards facial, while Cuoco re-posted a photo from her makeup artist Jamie Greenberg.

Both actresses have been nominated for Emmys this year for their roles in The Crown and The Flight Attendant, respectively.
