Ed Sheeran wasted no time getting back to work after winning his copyright trial, with a pop-up performance in the middle of a New York City street.

The gig was performed on top of a Volvo as part of Sheeran's promotional duties for his latest album Subtract.

According to fans who were present, the Thinking Out Loud singer performed about six songs at the street show in Soho. Sheeran also shared a clip from the gig on his Instagram page.

The pop-up performance took place on the same day King Charles III was crowned during his coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey in the UK.

It's interesting timing given reports the British singer turned down an offer to perform at the coronation concert.

However, Sheeran has since shut down those rumours by revealing that he was never asked to perform at the star-studded event.

"I want to clear something up actually because there was loads of stuff in the press that I turned down the coronation, and no one ever asked me ever," he said on SiriusXM's The Morning Mash Up.

"I assume if they went online and went, 'What's Ed doing on May 6th?' they would've been like, 'Oh, he's playing in Dallas'.

"I think that's what happened, but obviously, [the] press had the negative story of loads of people turning down the coronation. But I never ever turned it down,' he added.

"I'm excited to tune [in]. It's historic."

Sheeran will be doing another pop-up gig in Dallas ahead of his own concert at AT&T stadium in Texas tonight.

However, he has traded in the Volvo – which didn't seem to have the sturdiest roof for an adult to stand and sing on – for an ice cream van.

Sheeran was beaming during the street gig, and while previewing the next pop-up performance in a video posted to Instagram, clearly happy to be back to doing what he loves after the end of the copyright trial.

The singer was on trial for copyright infringement, with claims made by the estate of the late songwriter Ed Townsend that Sheeran's song Thinking Out Loud "copied" elements of Marvin Gaye's Let's Get It On.

A jury took less than three hours to decide on Thursday that Sheeran did not copy Gaye's hit song with Thinking Out Loud.

Sheeran had become so frustrated with what he described as "baseless claims" that he had threatened to quit music if he lost the trial.

He was also forced to miss his grandmother's funeral in Ireland because of the trial.
