Chris Hemsworth has made a surprising career move, signing on as co-owner of Australian whiskey brand Archie Rose.

The announcement came from the distillery today, with Hemsworth saying he has “been a fan of Archie Rose for a long time.”

“Wherever I am in the world, tasting an Archie Rose whisky immediately transports me right back home, to that feeling of sitting around a campfire in the Australian bush with my mates,” the Thor actor said in a statement.

“Their ethos of only using Australian-grown malts to produce flavour-packed whiskies at their Sydney distillery is truly awesome. They’re a brilliant example of what Australia does best and I can’t wait to share that with the world.”

The Hollywood star bought an undisclosed stake in Australia’s most awarded distillery, and will help push the product into the US.

The brand added that they are “beyond proud and excited” to welcome Hemsworth as a co-owner of the distillery and whisky brand.

Archie Rose was founded by Will Edwards in 2014. The brand partners with Australian malt farmers to create their award-winning whiskey.

“Our approach has always been about championing local ingredients to create spirits that taste truly Australian,” Edwards said in a statement.

“Having Chris join the business as a co-owner allows us to bring that ambition to the world.

“We aren’t just making spirits; we are using Australia’s raw materials and ingenuity as the base for producing the world’s best whisky, gin and other spirits, telling the stories of the growers and the land beneath them.”

With Hemsworth now on board, the brand is expanding into the US, Asia, and New Zealand later this year with three whiskies made in collaboration with Hemsworth.

Archie Rose is Australia’s most-rewarded distillery. The brand opened its first distillery and bar in Sydney’s Roseberry, in 2015. They also have a large distillery in Banksmeadow.

Hemsworth has invested in businesses before, and even made hundreds of millions with his own fitness app.

The star previously invested in bioscience company Colossal, and recently sold his fitness app Centr to Mark Bezos, brother of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, for $US200 million ($279 million).
