Bonnie Tyler’s heartbreaking five-word admission in final TV interview before death

Bonnie Tyler said she simply loved her job too much to take a break in what would become her final TV interview before her death at 75.

The Welsh singer died on July 8, after weeks in an induced coma following emergency intestinal surgery while in Portugal in May.

Speaking on British talk show Lorraine in February, Tyler made a heartbreaking five-word admission: “Next year, I’ll slow down”.

In the interview, Tyler looked ahead to a run of UK concerts including scheduled performances in Manchester, London and Cardiff and brushed off any suggestions she was considering retirement.

“I often say next year I’ll slow down, but I keep being asked to do shows in great places and I love what I do,” she told host Lorraine Kelly.

“You know, we have a lot of fun. I tell a lot of stories in between my songs… what they’re about and everything. I’ve had a wonderful life.”

“What a life you are having! You are having a lovely life. It is great,” Kelly replied.

Tyler even admitted that straight after the interview she would be hitting the road again to head to a sold-out show in Belfast.

While Tyler had new music coming, she said she never got sick of singing her biggest hits, like Total Eclipse of the Heart, It’s a Heartache andHolding Out for a Hero, for fans.

“I love singing them. People say to me, ‘Don’t you get fed up?’ No!” Tyler said.

The interview saw Tyler reflect on the enduring popularity of those songs, particularly Total Eclipse of the Heart.

“You see adverts all the time, you hear [Total Eclipse of the Heart] all the time. It’s had a billion streams on Spotify,” Kelly said.

“You think to yourself, ‘Oh, well, that’s great. Bonnie can sit back with her feet up’, but the Spotify thing… you don’t really get much.”

Tyler explained she was “just the singer” and humbly credited songwriter Jim Steinman for the ’80s hit.

The singer’s interview came just three months before a dramatic deterioration in her health.

Tyler admitted to hospital in Faro, Portugal, after suffering a perforated intestine and was later placed into an induced coma.

In June, her family announced she’d regained consciousness but remained critically ill in intensive care.

Tyler’s death was confirmed in a statement published on her official website.

It read: “Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for.

“We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy.”
