2001
Prior to becoming a wildly successful actress, Hathaway acted in local community theatres in New Jersey. She also sang in her school choir.
Hathaway was so inspired by her mother's role in Les Misérables, and wanted to become an actress.

2001
In 2001, Hathaway landed a career-defining role in The Princess Diaries, reportedly earning a spot due to having the best "princess" hair. She acted alongside Julie Andrews who told Vanity Fair in 2022 that her co-star's talent was evident "from the first day of shooting" and since the movie's premiere, they have remained "great friends".
The New York Times compared her to the likes of Julia Roberts, describing her as "royalty in the making, a young comic talent with a scramble of features".
2004
Over the next few years she would go on to work in smaller productions, including a concert for the classic musical Carnival!
Hathaway also starred alongside Christopher Plummer in the film adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel, Nicholas Nickleby.

This was the year of The Devil Wears Prada, which was yet another career-defining role for her.
Here she is at the premiere in New York, sporting devilish red.
She later revealed to Variety that she was impressed with her co-stars improvisation skills.
"I remember seeing Meryl come up with 18 different lines on the spot. Stanley Tucci was doing the same, and you. I was just like this kindergartner who was like, 'How are they all so good?'"
2007
By 2007, Hathaway had 14 movies under her belt, including her most recent film, Becoming Jane.
She played Jane Austin in a biographical portrait of her life before fame.

Hathaway acted as a grief counsellor for plane-crash survivors in the movie Passengers.

2009
2009 saw Anne Hathaway in Bride Wars, where she and Kate Hudson's character go from best friends to rivals over their wedding being scheduled for the same day.
Hathaway had to prepare for this role physically, revealing to Collider that she was in training.
"Well, I really wanted Emma to appear like an ex-ballerina. I wanted everything to be tight and proper and sinewy, so I really watched what I ate. Just the usual stuff. Whatever the character needed, that's what we did."
