In 2013, Angelina Jolie revealed she'd had a preventive double mastectomy to reduce her risk of developing breast cancer due to her having the BRCA1 gene.

Now, the Hollywood star, 50, has bravely displayed her scars for the first time while covering TIME France.

"I share these scars with many women I love. And I'm always moved when I see other women share theirs," she told the publication.

"When I shared my experience in 2013, it was to encourage informed choices," she said about women keeping on top of their health.

In the powerful cover photo, the Maria star wears a low-cut black top and stares pensively at the camera while placing her hand over her bare chest.

She wears minimal makeup and wears her highlighted hair out and around her face.

Twelve years ago, she wrote a candid piece for The New York Times detailing her decision to have a preventative double mastectomy.

"The truth is I carry a 'faulty' gene, BRCA1, which sharply increases my risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer," the mother of six revealed.

Jolie's mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand, died at the age of 56 in 2007 after an almost 10-year battle with cancer.

In October, Jolie told Hello! about her preventative surgery, saying it was influenced by her family history.

"I did choose to have that [surgery] because I lost my mother and my grandmother very young," she told the outlet.

"And then I've also had my ovaries removed, because that's what took my mother. Those are my choices.

"I don't say everybody should do it that way, but it's important to have the choice. And I don't regret it."
