Angelina Jolie’s older brother James Haven has come out as gay in a live-steam with ex-wife Romi Imbelli, following their divorce.

The 53-year-old, son of actor Jon Voight, joined his ex-wife on her Substack live-stream on Friday where he simply stated: “I’m gay”.

“I mean, as gay as gay can,” reacted Imbelli with an enthusiastic cheer.

Haven and Imbelli were married in August 2024 for just 15 days before separating. The pair reconnected after having their marriage officially annulled in March 2025.

Haven then reportedly shared a letter about coming to terms with his sexuality, which he read during the live-stream.

According to multiple US outlets, the letter read: “When I was a little boy, I was absolutely obsessed with the Disney princesses.

“I would sneak glitter onto my cheeks, swipe mascara onto my lashes, and for those moments, I felt like magic,” as Haven added he “didn’t have the language back then to explain why I just knew it made me feel more like me.”

Haven said it was never about pretending to be someone else, but allowing the world to meet the person “who has been here all along”.

“It was about letting a part of myself shine that had always been there.”

“I hope my family and others can choose love over fear, understanding over judgment and connection over the beliefs that may have kept us apart,” he continued.

“I hope they can look beyond the labels and simply see me with the same heart, the same laugh, the same soul they’ve always known.”

During the live-stream, Imbelli looked back on the moment Haven was “getting close to coming out”. She could see it, even though she didn’t want to.

“I didn’t want to believe it. I knew it and I wanted to support you and love you,” she told her ex, who she has known since she was 20 years old.

She talked about “a battle” of supporting someone’s truth and “breaking a lie you want to believe so badly”.

“[And] grieving the idea of what we were supposed to be in the world... You are my love, and you happen to be gay.”

As the live-stream ended, Imbelli then posted on social media explaining she “wasn’t here to out someone I love” with the live video.

“I was here to help set someone free. There is a difference. In return he set me free,” she wrote.

“Love doesn’t always fit into the boxes we’re taught it should. Sometimes it transforms. Sometimes it changes shape. Sometimes it asks us to let go of what we imagined so we can embrace what is true,” she went on.

“I’ll always love him. Just not as his wife, but as my family, my best friend, and one of the greatest loves of my life.”

Haven has kept a relatively low profile since his last film in 2012. He famously made his onscreen debut in Jolie’s 1998 movie Gia.
