Amy Schumer's new movie 'I Feel Pretty' sparks backlash over body image plot
Amy Schumer has long been praised for her refreshing perspective on body image, but her upcoming film has some people confused.
The 36-year-old Trainwreck star tweeted the trailer for her new comedy, I Feel Pretty, on February 9, writing alongside the clip, "Change everything, without changing anything."
In the short video, we meet protagonist Renee (Schumer) who falls off her bike during a spin class, hits her head, and wakes to possess a newfound confidence.
"I've always wondered what it's like to be undeniably pretty," Schumer says via voiceover at the beginning of the clip.
And low and behold, that's exactly what happens. (Thanks, head injury!).
Not only does she love her "new" physical appearance, but she has oodles of confidence with the opposite sex, and zero doubts about her capabilities at work. (Much to the surprise of her pals, played by Michelle Williams, Busy Phillips, and Emily Ratajkowski).
Renee's new lease on life results in her trying out everything she was too self-conscious to try before.
But critics have taken aim at Schumer's handling of body image, with some even going as far to say it contributes to women's oppression.
Fellow comedian Sofie Hagen unleashed a barrage of tweets that took Schumer to task on representation, while slamming Hollywood's unrealistic beauty ideals.
Another person expressed disappointment in Schumer's dealing with the intricacies of body image, writing, "It’s the same narrative of a 'bigger' girl being ugly."
While others suggested it reinforces the notion that being "skinny" is the only prerequisite for self-confidence.
Of course, there were plenty of fans who loved the trailer, and praised Schumer.
After all, this is the same woman who literally called out a magazine for labelling her "plus-size".
As for whether her message got lost in translation? We'll have to wait and see.
