Thirty years ago, the world witnessed one of Hollywood’s most high-profile divorces. Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere met at a backyard barbecue in 1988, tying the knot in 1991. In 1995, they went their separate ways.

Now, more than three decades later, the former couple have found themselves with an odd connection thrust back into the spotlight. Crawford’s daughter and Gere’s son are the stars of a new TV show.

The Shards is a brand-new TV series, based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis. The ensemble cast includes newcomers Hayes Warner, Igby Rigney, Graham Campbell, Homer Gere and Kaia Gerber.

“We all met together in a dive bar a couple weeks before filming,” Gere tells nine.com.au.

He said it was “funny” meeting Gerber for the first time. While there parents were married, they’d been separated for years before Gere and Gerber were ever even born.

“It was like one of the first things – I forget who said it, me or her, but it was like, ‘Should we address the elephant in the room?’,” he laughs.

“And we did, and then we never really spoke about it again, you know? It’s like, we spent a lot of time together shooting this thing, so it very quickly became a fun fact that’s kind of in the background of our experience of each other.”

Gerber recalls the meeting almost identically, saying that she and Gere, “paid our respects” to the elephant in the room and moved on.

“We’ve had this really long eight-month journey together now, and our friendship has grown so far beyond that connection that it kind of feels like maybe one of the least interesting things,” she says.

“To us [anyway]. I know to the world, it’s probably the most interesting thing. I just love and adore Homer.”

The Shards follows an elite group of California prep school students in the ’80s, who find themselves embroiled in a mystery when a charismatic new student named Robert Mallory (Gere) arrives, and a serial killer dubbed The Trawler begins terrorising their town.

The series was created by Ryan Murphy, the man behind several TV shows that raised the cast’s generation, including Glee, Scream Queens and American Horror Story.

“I’m surprised there wasn’t a second Big Bang when Ryan Murphy and Bret Easton Ellis collaborated for the first time, and I’m even more surprised that we got to be there,” Graham jokes.

While it was the first time most of the cast had worked with Murphy, Gerber had collaborated with him previously, having appeared in a few episodes of American Horror Story.

“I was such a massive fan of the book, and I’m such a Bret Easton Ellis fan, and then when Ryan told me he was adapting it, I was like, I actually can’t believe this hasn’t happened before,” Gerber says.

“It feels absolutely perfect. 1981 is such a rich time, and I think Ryan aesthetically does the eras and just the wardrobe and the hair and everything so perfectly. It was the dream collaboration for sure.”

When it comes to living up to expectations, the cast said that working with Murphy was beyond their wildest dreams, but one thing came as a shock.

“Not enough people know that he’s the funniest person I’ve ever met,” Warner says.

“So funny, and so smart, and commands a room, but also allows you to explore and try things. [He] has such a good energy that you feel like you can go up to him and ask him questions ... [but] he sometimes will say something that just cuts through everything that is so funny.”
