Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot 'in the works' with Sarah Michelle Gellar set to return

Buffy the Vampire Slayer may be resurrected again.

More than two decades after Sarah Michelle Gellar hung up her wooden stake as Buffy Summers, the cult classic TV series is reportedly being revived for a new generation, and it's already generating a lot of buzz.

Hulu is reportedly on the brink of ordering a pilot for the much-anticipated reboot, which will feature Gellar reprising her iconic role as the titular Slayer – though she's expected to appear in a recurring capacity rather than leading the show.

The series is being touted as a continuation rather than a remake, focusing on a new Slayer stepping into the spotlight.

Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals), a self-confessed lifelong Buffy fan, is set to direct the pilot and will also serve as an executive producer.

Dolly Parton's production company, Sandollar, which co-produced the original series, is also apparently attached to the project.

Parton previously teased the potential return of Buffy, telling fans in 2024, "They're still working on that. They're thinking about bringing it back and revamping it."

Variety is reporting that Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman (who previously worked on Fringe, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, and more recently the Stan Original Series Poker Face) will pen the pilot and helm the creative vision for the series.

Zhao is attached to direct and executive produce under her Book of Shadows production banner. Gellar would also executive produce along with Gail Berman. Fran Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui will executive produce.

Berman, the Kuzuis, and Parton were all executive producers on the original Buffy series.

Gellar's involvement marks a significant change of heart. The actress, who earned a Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal of Buffy, had previously expressed resistance to revisiting the character.

"It's funny, I always used to say no, because it's in its bubble and it's so perfect," she said in a December 2024 interview while promoting the Dexter prequel Original Sin. "But watching Sex and the City and seeing Dexter, and realising there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, 'Well, maybe.'"

This is not the first attempt to revive the Buffyverse. In 2018, a reboot led by Monica Owusu-Breen was announced but never moved forward. Owusu-Breen assured fans at the time that the project wouldn't replace beloved characters but instead introduce a new Slayer to battle the forces of darkness. Executive producer Gail Berman later confirmed in 2022 that the project had been placed "on pause."

However, discussions about a reboot never entirely faded. By mid-2024, whispers of a revived Buffy project resurfaced, culminating in negotiations with Gellar and Zhao that cemented the direction for a continuation rather than a remake. Development accelerated toward the end of 2024, with Hulu emerging as the frontrunner for streaming rights.

The original Buffy The Vampire Slayer premiered in 1997 and ran for seven seasons, becoming a cultural phenomenon. With its sharp wit, complex characters, and groundbreaking portrayal of a strong female lead, the series has maintained a dedicated fan base.

Its influence is still felt today, credited with popularising ongoing story arcs in television and paving the way for other genre-defining shows.

If Hulu greenlights the series, it will join a lineup of other high-profile reboots, including Prison Break and Futurama. But for many fans, the real excitement lies in seeing Buffy Summers once again picking up her stake, even if just for a few pivotal moments, and welcoming a new generation into the fight against the Hellmouth.
