They say never smile at a crocodile, but no one's ever said anything about not saying hello to a buffalo.

So when a pair of fishermen came across a buffalo while wetting a line in a remote river in Arnhem Land, they didn't expect to tick it off.

But apparently they must have done something offensive, because this hulking beast wanted to give them a piece of its mind – charging at their tinny to get them to rack off.

And it didn't just shout "oi, get outta here" from the safety of the shore.

It heard them laughing and yahooing and decided to give chase.

As if to say "I'll give yewse something to laugh about in a minute", the buffalo tailgated the tinny, which managed to get away just in the nick of time.

The funny-yet-terrifying encounter was caught on film, and is now doing the rounds on the internet in a big way, clocking up nearly 200,000 views.

It comes from cracking Facebook page ABC Tales from the Tinny, which, according to the about section, is the social media account for "A fishing program. Well, sort of."

Video of the buffalo boat charge was shared with Tales from the Tinny by Luke Pearce, who says he was surprised to see it enter croc-infested water in a brilliant yarn encapsulating everything that's great about The Top End.

"We got the camera out and started filming because we thought it'd run away, but then all of a sudden it jumped in the drink and basically attacked us," Pearce told Mark Rigby at Radio National Darwin.

"It came and had a crack at the boat and it was a pretty decent size.

"Big enough to rock the boat, that's for sure."
