When Shannah's dad shared with her that he had Paget's cancer – a male form of breast cancer – he encouraged her to get tested for the BRCA gene.

Shannah did just that and tested positive, meaning she was at high risk for breast cancer.

"I was like 'Alright, we've got this gene, I'm gonna deal with it'," Shanna said in an episode of Botched that you can watch for free on 9Now.

In an effort to save her life she underwent a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction in September 2014. Her dad sadly passed away that November.

Watch her story in the video above.

"I think of my dad who literally saved my life. If it wasn't for him having breast cancer, I probably wouldn't be here right now," Shannah reflected.

Over the years, Shannah's breasts became "deformed" and so she visited Dr Terry Dubrow and Dr Paul Nassif in the hopes of getting her breast reconstruction reconstructed.

Shannah felt her breasts looked "deformed" and hoped Dr Dubrow could fix them. 9Now

For Dr Dubrow, it was a pretty routine surgery but when he got into the operating theatre he made a startling discovery.

"Oh f--k," Dr Dubrow muttered after inspecting Shannah's breast further.

"All the factors we were concerned about... she had all of them. She had scar tissue, inaccurately released muscle, excess skin and breast tissue."

The fact that Shannah had breast tissue still remaining after her double mastectomy was a huge oversight from the prior surgeon that left her majorly at risk to developing the cancer she had the gene for.

"If that's how I feel, imagine how she's gonna feel."

At Shannah's first post-surgery consultation, Dr Dubrow revealed the "devastating" discovery he'd made to Shannah.

"I got fooled, because your mastectomy, that's a very basic operation, so I just assumed that the general surgeon took all the breast tissue," he began.

"But unfortunately there was a lot left.

"So everyday thereafter that you had had that prophylactic mastectomy you still had 100 percent risk of breast cancer."

The news was devastating for Shannah, but unfortunately only got worse. Dr Dubrow explained that the textured implants she had as part of her initial reconstruction predisposed her to a very rare form of breast cancer known as anaplastic large cell lymphoma.

Dr Dubrow revealed to Shannah that she'd actually been living with a higher risk of developing cancer. 9Now

"In a way [the mastectomy and reconstruction] kind of made your cancer risk worse," Dr Dubrow concluded.

Shannah reacted as anyone would telling cameras: "I'm shocked and ticked off and I could have easily developed breast cancer at any time and not even known it."

The good news is that Dr Dubrow had removed all remaining breast tissue and her textured implants and that pathology results would soon reveal if Shannah was cancer-free.
