Moment expert left stunned by mysterious ring before tracking down the creator on Antiques Roadshow

A special episode of Antiques Roadshow saw the show's expert host embark on a hunt to find out more about an unusual ring from the 1970s.

Missing any mark from the designer, fine jewels expert Joanna Hardy was determined to locate who made it... and what she discovered left her stunned.

It was a change of pace for the usually unflappable Joanna. The Antiques Roadshow jewellery specialists have mastered their poker faces and are perfectly able to deliver huge surprises to unsuspecting owners.

As Joanna likes to put it, jewellery is about love, power and a little bit about scandal. But this particular jewel also turned out to be a bit of a puzzle.

The original owner purchased the unique-looking ring in 1972 at a jewellery store. The central piece is a Tourmaline, a natural stone from Brazil.

"They're highly collected now," confirmed Joanna, adding that the jewel would probably be worth around £5,000 to £7,000 pounds (AUD$9500 – $13,200).

The owner, who couldn't even recall what she'd originally paid for it, was floored. "That is lovely," she managed to say.

However there was no signature on the piece, which added some real mystery.

Joanna hopefully added that, "maybe, [they] might be watching"… as she really wanted to know who was responsible for making the standout ring.

After the show went to air, the producers were flooded with contacts suggesting who may have created it. Finally, they determined the maker and Joanna headed to the appropriate registry office to have it officially stamped with their signature.

The maker was a man named Lawrence Wheaton (born in 1944), trained with the Swedish Royal Court Jewellers. "Which is pretty amazing," confirmed Joanna.

Lawrence has since passed away, but his wife was able to confirm he was the maker and the ring was marked with official stamps to show off its new status.

Once stamped, the value increased to £6000 to £8000 (AUD$11,3000 – $15,000) and became a magnificent heirloom piece for its thrilled owner.
