Andy Lee's 150-year-old home reno snagged by unforseen problem – as the comedian gets his hands dirty

When you buy a 150-year-old house you're bound to run into a few problems right? Well, Andy Lee and the team didn't quite see this one coming.

The comedian and his fiancée Bec Harding have been renovating their $8.5 million Melbourne mansion since 2023 with the aim of restoring many of its heritage features.

That includes the roof which was originally Welsh slate. Andy's builder revealed there was just one major issue: "[Wales] have locked out the rest of the world. They're not shipping their slate out of the country anymore."

Unable to import Welsh slate, Andy's building team pivoted and discovered an old Brighton church with a Welsh slate roof.

They got their hopes up thinking they'd be able to use it, but it turned out there wasn't quite enough to cover Andy's roof.

With their first choice out of the question, the building team settled for Canadian slate which won't exactly match but hey, close enough!

Andy gets on the tools

Andy Lee isn't just overseeing his Ravenswood renovation he's getting on the tools...well, just for a short while.

With a hammer in one hand and a nail in the other, Andy got to work on installing the slate tiles or at least one of them.

Admiring his handiwork Andy put his hand up to work weekends before reality set in.

"Ahhh I think that's all for today guys, I think I pulled a muscle," he joked.

The Hundred host took to Instagram to poke fun at himself and give credit to the building team who were really getting their hands dirty.

"Just another example of how I'm always out there, on the tools, working hard to get this house built. I'm basically Noah from the Notebook (someone please tag Ryan Gosling).

"⁠⁠It's been a fascinating journey trying to match and restore the slate roof of the heritage house. The care and craftsmanship was something to behold."

Andy and Bec see what their finished house will look like for the first time

Keeping fans up with his reno journey, Andy shared the exact moment he and Bec saw their finished build for the first time... in render form.

"As promised, Bec's reaction to first seeing the River House render. She never disappoints," Andy captioned a video.

"Oh my... that is real," Bec said in shock. "I love it, it's so gorgeous," she grinned."

The star shared a video of the final renders, including the unique finish they've chosen to clad the back of their new build.

"I've decided to clad the newer build with an oxidised copper like The Statue of Liberty is, so it's kind of greeny blue," Andy revealed.

"It will feel a lot more warmth and hopefully disappear into the sky," like you can see in the digital render above.

"So that's what you'll see if you look back from the heritage house," he explained. "From the river side, this is what they're hoping to achieve, which I think is magic."

"I mean they've nailed it. They've hit the point that we want to honour the old and enjoy the new and Bec just lost her marbles when she saw this."

Safe to say, she did!

Fans were curious if the newly engaged couple had any disagreements while settling on the final colour, while others were obsessed with Bec's reaction.

"Any behind the scenes 'arguments' over colours coming? 😂😂," one follower asked.

"Plenty!!" Andy replied.

"The way Andy looks at Bec at the end. ❤️," pointed out another, while a third commented: "She is always just pure sunshine."

Andy revealed the historic house will sit proudly on its own and will be restored, whereas the new structure will be their home, overlooking the river views.

"All connected underground below the piazza 😊 🏡 👌🏼," he confirmed.

Andy and Bec's Ravenswood reno journey

After purchasing the home for $8.5 million in 2021, Andy and Bec officially began sharing the restoration process with fans in November 2023.

In that time the building team has done demolition work, excavation and even got started on the space where Andy will have his very own golf simulator.

It's no doubt a very special place for the pair with Andy even proposing to Bec at the home in May 2024.
