Nerves and emotions were running high as Sheila and Tyson prepared for the C-section birth.

Doctors announced that baby boy had come out "feet and bottom first," but time stood still as mum Sheila repeatedly asked if "he is breathing and OK?"

Just moments later, Phoenix let out an almighty cry and the whole room – mum, dad, doctors and nurses – laughed with excitement and relief.

You can watch the incredible moment Phoenix was born in the video below:

Sheila wept as she finally got to hold Phoenix in her arms.

"He is my child and I'm a mother and I never thought that would happen. It felt so out of reach," she reflected on the long-awaited moment.

With the birth having been filmed last year, Sheila and Tyson appeared on Today Extra with nine-month-old Phoenix to share their inspiring journey.

"He's got a lot of energy, he's not a great sleeper but we are filled with so much gratitude for the doctors, the donors, the IVF process," Sheila beamed.

"We love being parents, we're older parents, we're finding energy from...I don't know where."

Sheila and Tyson's journey to parenthood

Sheila and Tyson have shared their journey from the beginning of Season 1 of Big Miracles.

Having taken the couple until their mid 40s to find each other, having children was a struggle.

At first the couple proceeded with IVF with eggs that Sheila had frozen in her 30s.

But when they learned those eggs weren't viable they let go of the idea of using Sheila's biological eggs and looked overseas for a donor.

After a laborious and emotionally-taxing process they eventually selected on an egg donor from America.

Then came the next step which was to have that donor egg fertilised with Tyson's sperm, which he provided via a deposit.

Those unfamiliar with the IVF process may have been surprised to learn that you can't simply fertilise an egg then transfer it into Sheila's uterus. Her body has to also be ready to sustain a pregnancy, which means getting it hormonally ready to accept a fertilised embryo.

Sheila's first round of preparing for the transfer presented a heart-breaking reminder of the challenges her age presents, yet again. Her hormone levels were too low to sustain a pregnancy.

Sheila's determined and passionate specialist, Dr Raewyn Teirney, ended up doing a 'takeover' of her uterus. She switched Sheila to hormone replacement therapy, helping her body get to where it needed to be… and it worked.

Sheila and Tyson could hardly bare to hope that their embryo transfer would work, but it did.

At 36 weeks, Sheila and Tyson faced a final challenge as they rushed to the hospital at 2am after they discovered Sheila had been bleeding.

After a tense wait, the pair were relieved when doctors found Phoenix's heart beat and assured that he was healthy.
