Seal spotted having a whale of a time

Whale watchers in South Australia have been treated to a spectacular show, when a playful seal splashed about with a southern right whale at Petrel Cove.

The unlikely animal friends looked like they were having a great time as spectators enjoyed the show.

Located in the South Australian coastal town of Victor Harbour, Petrel Cove is a popular whale-watching site.

Sightings have increased in recent weeks as more whales migrate from Antarctic waters to the warmer waters of Australia.

South Australia’s whale-watching season typically runs from May until September, however while more are being seen along the south-east coast, this year the official season is expected to be quieter due to their breeding cycle.

The adventurous seal and its new mate in Petrel Cove joined a growing list of exciting whale sightings off Australian waters.

Last month a pygmy sperm whale got stuck in shallow waters off Williamstown, Victoria where rescuers spent hours working to free it.

Earlier this month a giant humpback put on a spectacular show off the New South Wales coast, breaching only metres from a whale-watching vessel in Port Macquarie, soaking those on board.
