Child critically injured in Melbourne crash

A child has been critically injured in a crash in Melbourne's southwest this afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to the corner of Duncans Road and College Road, Werribee after reports two cars had collided just after 4pm.

A nine-year-old child suffered critical injuries to their upper body and had to be cut out of the smashed car.

They were rushed to the Royal Children's Hospital for treatment.

A second person was taken to Werribee Mercy hospital and another was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Their conditions are unknown.

Earlier traffic was heavy in the area but both vehicles have now been towed.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
