The mastermind behind a tax fraud linked to West Australian mining entrepreneurs has failed in his bid to appeal his conviction.

Gregory John Dunn was convicted in late 2013 of conspiracy to defraud the Commonwealth after a jury trial in the Supreme Court of WA and was handed a seven-year jail term four months later.

Dunn largely devised a tax avoidance scheme involving a $7.19 million false interest bill for the family trusts of Ausdrill founder Ron Sayers and Barminco founder Peter Bartlett.
