WA scooter driver happy to be fined
AAP
A West Australian scooter driver says he is extremely lucky to have been fined by police for failing to fasten his helmet.
The Broome man was fined $550 and lost eight demerit points just hours before being involved in a serious crash that broke his shoulder, but the run-in with the law ensured he was wearing his helmet.
The man wrote a letter to WA Police the day after the incident, thanking them for the fine that may have saved his life.

"I have no doubt if I didn't get fined in the morning I would now have head injuries," he wrote.
