WA Police union renews workers compo call

The Western Australian Police Union has renewed calls for workers' compensation, asking the state government what it will take for it to be a priority.

Senior vice president Brandon Shortland said WA police remained the only law enforcers in Australia not covered by workers' compensation, despite it being an issue since 2005.

"The current government has failed to act, failed our police, failed to bring in a fair and sustainable compensation system for police," he told ABC radio on Tuesday.

The renewed call is in response to the ABC's Four Corners program on Monday night, which showed the growing number of police suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

"Almost every police officer could relate to the stories we heard last night," Mr Shortland said.

He said the current protocol of medically retiring officers left them with no support, and encouraged them to "go away".

"They medically retire the broken ones, who are then left to live on whatever superannuation they may have been lucky enough to scrape together," he said.
