WA govt considering FIFO deaths inquiry

The West Australian government will decide next week whether to launch a parliamentary inquiry into a spate of fly-in fly-out worker deaths, Premier Colin Barnett says.

It has been reported that at least nine FIFO workers have taken their lives over the past 12 months.

Mr Barnett told an online Q&A with the West Australian on Thursday that the issue of an inquiry had been raised in parliament and the government was considering it.

Mental Health Commissioner Tim Marney told a public hearing on Wednesday that he would appoint a senior clinician to investigate the deaths of the workers.

But Mr Marney said there was no need for an inquiry into the causes of FIFO suicides and the services provided to workers because that was already known.
