A West Australian couple who were trying to secure a $300,000 loan to support their family farm have won a $2 million Lotto prize.

The husband and wife from the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale initially thought they had misread the numbers following the Saturday Lotto draw.

"I thought my wife had buggered it up," the husband said.

"It wasn't until we got our grandson to double check the numbers on his computer that we realised we'd actually won," the wife added.

Like many farmers, 2016 had been a year of hardship for the couple and they were in the process of securing a loan when their luck changed.

"No one wants to admit things are tough, and farmers are some of the proudest people in Australia," the husband said.

"This money means we can cancel the loan and support the family farm ourselves."

The winning ticket was sold at newsXpress Armadale Central.
