WA dog basher fined, banned

A Bunbury man who maliciously bashed an already-injured dog has been banned from owning an animal for two years and fined $5000.

Kourosh Bahmani, 49, of Carey Park was convicted on Thursday in the Fremantle Magistrates Court on two counts of animal cruelty against a Staffordshire bull-terrier cross named Buddy.

Police on patrol caught Bahmani punching Buddy's left hind leg in the back of a parked car in Lake Monger in July 2015.

The officers restrained Bahmani and saw that Buddy was walking with a limp, was visibly in pain and frightened.

They seized the dog from Bahmani and referred the case to the RSPCA WA.

The animal welfare agency's investigations found that Buddy had been hit by a vehicle in Bunbury in March 2015, sustaining a fractured left leg.

Bahmani left the dog at a vet for five days, but did not pay for its pain relief and antibiotics or go ahead with recommended surgery for his leg.

Bahmani was charged and convicted with maliciously beating an animal and allowing an animal to suffer harm which could have been alleviated by taking reasonable steps.

He was fined $5000, ordered to pay $2096.75 in veterinary costs and pay the RSPCA's legal costs of $1500.

He is banned from owning an animal for two years and Buddy has been forfeited to the RSPCA.
