A West Australian policeman has denied placing a tracking device in a woman's car to check if she was cheating on his colleague.

The sergeant, who cannot be named, is facing the Perth Magistrates Court accused of unlawfully using a tracking device and possessing a surveillance device knowing it was intended for unlawful use.

The court heard on Wednesday that the tracker was installed the night before the officer and his colleague left for a holiday in September 2012.

The sergeant said he installed the device because he was told the woman was using drugs and he wanted to find her supplier.

He denied knowing anything about the woman cheating on his colleague.

The sergeant's colleague previously pleaded guilty to unlawfully using a tracking device and will be sentenced on Friday.
