Russian animal smugglers plead guilty

Two Russian men have pleaded guilty to attempting to export dozens of native animals out of Western Australia.

Roman Nazarov and Eduard Galoyan were arrested, along with two Czech men, at Perth International Airport in February after postal workers tipped off Customs about several packages sent from destinations in the state's north.

All were destined for Europe and contained both live and dead reptiles.

Nazarov and Galoyan pleaded guilty to dozens of Commonwealth charges in the Perth Magistrates Court via video link from Hakea prison on Friday.

The pair will be sentenced in the District Court on August 14.

They are also facing charges under the state Conservation Act, which were adjourned to the Perth Magistrates Court for next month.

Their co-accused Jan Stenicka and Jan Suchanek have previously pleaded guilty to similar Commonwealth offences and will be sentenced later this year.
