Tributes flow for boy who died at Perth basketball game

Basketballs and shoes are being left at front doors as a tribute to the nine-year-old boy who collapsed and died while playing in the under 11 state championships in Perth.

The Lakeside Lightning player was coming off the court during a scheduled break when he collapsed at Warwick Stadium just before 11am yesterday.

Paramedics rushed the boy to the Joondalup Health Campus, but he was declared dead.

Lakeside Lightning director Steve Bezant said the community was shocked and saddened by the tragedy.

"We are dealing with the fact that one of our young players - a valued member of our community - has had his life taken in such a tragic way at such a young age," Mr Bezant said in a statement.

"We are all devastated right now and can only imagine what the family are going through at this moment.

"Our focus is to do everything we can to support them and the rest of the Lakeside community, who we know will be hurting as well."

Basketball WA chief executive Rob Clement said counselling and support was available for volunteers, the club and anyone else in the community who needed it.

The Perth Wildcats tweeted: "Our thoughts are with the family of the boy who died today after collapsing at Warwick Stadium. Stand together, WA basketball family."

Families have also begun posting tributes on social media, including photographs of basketballs and shoes at their front door.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with you, your family and club," Nellie Valentine wrote on Facebook.

Fleur Thornton posted "So sad. RIP little guy and keep swishing those hoops."

The boy's death is now subject to a coronial investigation.
