Three jailed in WA over $34m drug haul

Three men who imported more than 35kg of methylamphetamine into Australia hidden in ceramic tiles from China have each been handed tough jail sentences.

Michael Quoc Hong Ly, 35, Jacky Lee, 27, and Tuan Anh Phuong, 31, brought more than a dozen pallets of ceramic tiles into Western Australia in January last year inside a sea container.

The drugs were worth up to $34 million.

Police intercepted the package and replaced the drugs, keeping watch of the transportation of the tiles before executing raids and making arrests.

In sentencing on Friday, Supreme Court Justice Michael Corboy noted that the trio were all previously of good character and had not had any drug-related convictions in their pasts.

Ly was sentenced to 14 years behind bars, with a minimum of nine-and-a-half years.

Phuong was jailed for nine-and-a-half years with a minimum of six years.

Lee was sentenced to seven years in jail with a minimum of four years and three months.

A fourth man, Chung Yin "Rico" Tam, was previously jailed over the drug haul.

A woman, Li Chung Huang, 51, also stood trial with the trio, but was found not guilty by the jury.
