Meth driver jailed over girl's death in WA

A meth-affected man who caused a car rollover that killed his nine-year-old step-daughter has been sentenced to four years in a West Australian prison.

Aaron Leslie Grave was behind the wheel on Christmas Day in 2015 travelling with his family from Esperance to Kalgoorlie when he veered onto the wrong side of the road and lost control of the utility on a highway in WA's Goldfields region.

Madison Rae Curby was thrown out of the vehicle through a broken window and died from severe head injuries, the WA District Court heard on Monday.

Grave had 0.64mg of meth per litre of blood in his system at the time and has no recollection of the crash.

He spent four months in hospital and is now largely confined to a wheelchair and has an acquired brain injury.

Judge Laurie Levy accepted Grave was remorseful and his ill-health would serve as a constant reminder of his actions.

But Grave acted selfishly and the tragedy was avoidable, he added.

"From the explosion of sadness and grief suffered by her mother and father ... it's clear and palpable that the extent of your offence runs deep," he said.

"The impact of this offence has implications for the wider community, which is left to deal with the carnage and to assist you to heal physically, psychologically and emotionally.

"The frightening reality is that you represent every road user's nightmare."

Grave, who pleaded guilty to aggravated dangerous driving causing death, must serve at least two years behind bars before he can be eligible for parole.

He was also banned from driving for five years but Judge Levy said it was unlikely Grave would ever drive again.
