Low voter response in WA local elections

Voter participation in many local council elections in Western Australia has fallen short so far, compared with 2013 figures.

Deputy electoral commissioner Chris Avent said it was a concern that more than 1.36 million election packages had been sent through 75 districts but only 256,677 had been returned by mail so far.

"We are tracking about two to three per cent lower on a state-wide average, compared with returns at this stage in the 2013 local government elections," he said.

Mr Avent said it was important voters had their say on who would represent them on their local council over the next four years.

Ballot papers must be returned by October 17.
